激動の時代の流れに追い付くために、今日の私たちは、日々あらたに語彙を生み、もしくは定義しなおすことによって社会を営んでいる。しかし、自ら生み出したそれらを私たちは使いこなせているのだろうか。誤解と誤用のあいだで生じる小競り合いの毎日に疲弊してはいないだろうか。自分たちの言葉に、他ならぬ自分たちが翻弄されているいま、もう一度、今日の私たちを形成してきた「ことば」をたしかめたい。ナンセンスに遊ぶ幕末のわらべうた、近代国家の基準となる「国語」を打ち立てようと格調高い文語体で子どもたちを教育した明治期の唱歌、平明な内容かつ平易な口語体でも薫り高い芸術は可能であることを示した大正期の童謡、未来に生きる人々への痛切な祈りから始まった昭和戦後文学。それらの「ことば」を通して、私たちの言語感覚を思い出したい。

In order to keep up with the turbulent times, we are constantly creating and redefining words to run our Japanese society. But are we able to master the words we create? Are we exhausted from every day’s small misunderstandings and misuses? In a time where our words control us, let’s once again confirm the “words” that have formed who we are today; The nonsensical songs of the late Edo period, the high-style classical language used to educate children in the Meiji period, the lullabies of the Taisho period which showed that even simple and clear content can be artistic, and the post-World War II literature that started with a poignant prayer for future generations. Through these “words,” let’s recall our sense of the rich Japanese language.
